Wool Pellets for Gardens: What Are They and How Do They Work?

With spring approaching after a warmer winter, many gardens are already beginning to wake up. New growth is appearing, the soil is warming and gardeners are starting to prepare vegetable beds, flower gardens, pots and planting areas for the season ahead.

This is also when many people begin looking for a natural fertiliser that will support their plants without constantly needing to be reapplied. Wool pellets for gardens offer something a little different. They act as a slow-release nitrogen fertiliser, help the soil retain moisture and add organic matter as the wool gradually breaks down.

What are wool pellets?

Aussie Wool Pellets are made in Victoria from 100% Australian coarse crossbred wool right on our farm. All wool passes through my (Sherri) hands.

This is the type of wool commonly grown by prime lamb producers. It is not generally destined for fine clothing, but it still contains valuable natural nutrients that can be returned to the soil.

By processing the wool into small pellets, it becomes easy for gardeners to store, measure and mix through the soil. It also creates a new use for an Australian-grown natural fibre.

How do wool pellets work as fertiliser?

Wool naturally contains nitrogen, along with smaller amounts of potassium and sulphur. As the pellets absorb water and begin to break down, soil microorganisms gradually make these nutrients available to plants.

Unlike a fast-acting liquid fertiliser, wool pellets do not provide one sudden burst of growth. They work slowly within the soil, releasing nutrients as the wool decomposes.

This makes them particularly useful for spring garden preparation, vegetable gardens, flowers, raised garden beds, pots and new planting holes.

Wool pellets can support plant growth while also feeding the soil. As they break down, they add organic matter and help create a healthier growing environment around the roots.

Do wool pellets help retain moisture?

One of wool’s most useful natural qualities is its ability to absorb and hold water. Aussie Wool Pellets can hold up to three times their own weight in water.

When mixed through the soil and watered, the pellets expand. This allows them to retain moisture within the root zone, where it can remain available for plants to access.

Wool pellets will not remove the need to water your garden, but they can help the soil make better use of the water it receives. This can be particularly helpful in pots, raised garden beds and soils that dry out quickly during warmer spring and summer conditions.

As the pellets expand, they can also create small spaces within the soil. This supports better soil structure and allows water and air to move through the root zone.

Where can wool pellets be used?

Wool pellets are suitable for many different areas of the garden. They can be used in vegetable and herb gardens, flower beds, around fruit and ornamental trees, beneath shrubs and native plants, in pots and containers, and throughout raised garden beds.

For general garden preparation, mix the pellets through the top 5 to 10 centimetres of soil before planting. One kilogram of Aussie Wool Pellets can treat up to 25 square metres when mixed through the soil.

When planting an individual seedling, shrub or tree, approximately 20 grams can be placed into the planting hole and lightly mixed with soil before the plant goes in.

For established plants, scatter a small amount around the base, gently work the pellets into the soil and water them in well. Covering the pellets with soil or mulch helps keep the moisture and nutrients closer to the plant’s roots.

Can wool pellets help deter slugs and snails?

Wool pellets can also be used on the soil surface around vulnerable plants.

Once watered, the pellets expand and create a rough, fibrous barrier that may help discourage slugs and snails from reaching the plant. This is best used as one part of a broader garden pest management approach, particularly during spring when new seedlings are most vulnerable.
